Evaluation+video+response

Evaluation of Unilever Advert.

We were given the assignment to create an advert to advertise a product from Unilever, our chosen product was PG Tips tea, of which our motto was "The finest tea, Speciali-Tea" as the motto contains a pun the advert can appeal to younger audiences with a light sense of humour. We decided on PG tips tea as it would be easier to re-brand it to a different age demographic rather than a different nationality if we had chosen Lyons tea. "The predominantly 18-34 year-old ‘white collar’ audience who like to drink speciality tea rather than just standard “English” breakfast"Tea drinking demographics in england by Mintel(http://store.mintel.com/tea-and-other-hot-drinks-uk-february-2011)

We chosen the plot of the advert of a posh restaurant as PG Tips is mostly aimed at the working class whom do not have to much money and if we re branded to the richer folk whom have more money we can say that the taste was exquisite and we could charge more for each packet as the customer can afford it. We chose to go with this idea as we were advised that our previous idea was impractical and would not be completed for the deadline date. Our target audience was 20-50 year old whom are wealthy and earn above average wages.

We collected feedback from viewers of the advert by making a survey using www.surveymonkey.com as I emailed out requests for people to view the advert and fill out the survey. I think that my advert appealed to the correct age demographics as the people my survey was sent to replied that the advert was aimed at people 19-30 years old. And another person thought the advert was aimed at people 31-50 years old. (see below)
viewers of my advert thought that the advert was aimed at the 19-30 yr category

I think that the camera work was not as good as it should be as we did have a insistent where the camera man was visible in shot via a mirror also a member of the cast who was not meant to be on scene was visible as his elbow was seen in the left side of the shot. Thanks to the editor the scene was cropped down and the faults were removed as much as possible.
I think that the product was sold to the correct demographic in the advert by filming in a posh restaurant that a wealthy person would dine at.  We made the Tea look like Its the finest drink on the menu of which will show that there is nothing better. Our aim was to show that PG tips can be for the upper class demographics.
I am happy with our finished product as the film was edited and film before the deadline, I would prefer that we went with our original idea of a cardboard robot as that would aim towards the younger demographic.

BCAP (Broadcasting Committee of Advertising Practice) and CAP (committee of Advertising Practice) are set up by the ASA (Advertising Standards Authority@) to monitor the adverts that are show on television, adverts need to meet the committees requirements before the advert can be broadcast on television. BCAP and CAP can make you screen your advert past the watershed i.e 9 pm. an example of an advert that is shown past 9 pm is all Durex adverts as the content of the advert is not appropriate for children under the age of 16.
My advert is designed to be shown around 6 o'clock as around this time families will be sitting watching television eating their tea or watching television shows, my advert does not contain any adult material.
My advert does not break any BCAP or ASA rules or regulations for the time that it will be shown as it does not contain swearing or any form of violence or adult suited content. "Making sure that consumers are not misled, harmed or offended by ads helps to maintain consumer confidence in advertising. Advertising that is welcomed by consumers is good for business."-ASA homepage.

The advert appealed to 10/13 of the viewers as "it was straight to the point not dilly dally" meaning it made it clear from the start what the advert was selling.
to improve on the advert next time I will check that there is no one unintentionally in the camera shot as a couple of times a part of the crew was in shot. These mistakes where edited out.
The survey takers have shown that: Camera work was Good, Sound was okay, Dialogue was okay, lighting was also okay and Character placement was Good (results are based on averages)

  1. Hi Reuben.

    Good job on your analysis.

    Some points for improvement:
-Does your advert fit within the BCAP/ASA rules and what are they?
    -Add references throughout
-Bring in evidence from your surveys
-Use screenshots from your video to further illustrate your points.
-Expand throughout with solid evidence and reasoning. What did you learn from your surveys?

    Thanks,
    Josh
