In concert/Live footage.
In music videos there is a large variety of styles all of which the artist and/or directors use to portray the meaning of the music video or advertise the band as seen in videos featuring live footage from concerts an example of this is from the band called: Journey-Don't Stop believing. The video show the band performing in front of a cheering crowd therefore it is giving a positive message to the viewer/s.
Sam Smiths- I'm not the only one, follows a woman whose husband is cheating with another woman he met at a bar. The lyrics follow and describe the wife's emotion and how the lyrics justify the actions that the wife does, i.e burn his clothes.
Surrealist/Absurdest.
Freddie le Grande: Put your hands up for Detroit. The music video is set in a cloning facility where only men are being produce specifically Freddie Le Grand. The factory Is seemingly designed to make the ideal partner through tests that are conducted upon the clones. Artists choose bizarre and unreal situations and then normalise it as the situations can be entertaining to watch and can shock the viewer and prevents the viewer from forgetting the video there for not forgetting the song.

Impressionist:
In Skrillex's and Damian 'Jr Gong' Marley's "Make It Burn Them". A group of eviction officers go around a neighborhood evicting people as the boss has plans flatten and redesign the area that the Native American and supposed son live in. The music starts of calm as the son arrives home and begins to build up to the first chorus where the boy begins to perform a rain dance in a attempt to stop the eviction. The music is timed with the dance on the screen to accompany the dance and make it look more powerful. Nearing the end of the song the boy releases a spirit that ultimately defends the father and son from the corrupt police man. As the events are supernatural the music changes from lots of shorts beeps and 'wubs' to a long drawn out synth noise. the use of this noise is heard in the X-files theme to like it to supernatural/extraterrestrial actvity.
Intertexual:
In Eminem-We made you, Marshal dresses up as multiple characters such as Spock from Star Trek and Elvis Presley as he parodies television shows and events that happened in the early twenty first century. He references his early life including a picture of him in a pink Alf shirt holding a cake as there was a viral photo of him doing the exact same pose and action.
Animation is used in music videos as a way to show a protagonist for example doing an act the would be impossible In a live action or would cost the production company a large amount in special or practical effects. The production company and/or will also consider using animation if the artist want to portray a certain feel to the music video. an example of his is Daft Punk-Stronger.
lip-sync: Artists such as Galantis used lip sync in their music video where in 'No Money' the children with face paint on them mime the lyrics that are added in post. Music artists can speed up the song and slow it down to make the characters look as though they are moving fast or singing everything in slow motion.
Editing: A large amount of editing is used in all music videos even ones that show live footage as the video will switch between cameras. see below as the video is switching camera angles. this shows that editing has been done on the video.
Cutting to beats: Some artist will cut to beats in their music video to make a music video flow with the music. It makes the music video easy to follow and nice to watch. An example of a video that cut to the beat is Mike Posner's 'Cooler than me'.
Post-production effects: Colour correction is also used to emphasis a meaning to a song such as Zara Larssons, Lush Life where a large amount of shots are edited in post to remove colours and/or add graphics to the video.(see below)
Example of a particular effect, Chroma Key:
In Kanye West, Bound 2 Music video Chroma key and the use of a green screen is seen through out all of the scenes where Kanye or Kim they are edited onto a scenic video. The concept of the video is he is driving a motorbike riding through multiple scenes. This is used in videos to reduce the overall cost of the production or to portray a unique appearance.
Camera movements:
In Chiddy Bang's music video, The Opposite Of Adults. The director only uses moving shots or footage shot from a shoulder. This makes the footage look energetic and fun as the artists have their heads edited onto children so the fast pace will match the setting. The camera doesn't stop moving to represent the activeness of children.
Camera angles and shot types: Artists and production company will choose 'wide shots' for example to set the scene. An example of this is in Coldplays Hymn of the weekend.
Camera angles can be tilted up to show that the person or object that the camera is aimed at is superior or is significant to the other people or items featured in the shot. And if the camera is pointing down on a person or object it shows that the item or person is not as important as the other objects in the shot.
